In honour of the glorious weather of the past couple of days I have decided to do a few ‘summer’ themed posts. I remember looking forward to the summer or ‘big’ holiday as a kid. I also remember giving my mum ear ache after only one week with an incessant “I’m bored”. However there was always one thing that would keep me entertained and that was arts and crafts. Here are some fantastic summer craft activities that the kids will love!

Card Making Kit

This had to be number one on my list! Card making is a craft that is accessible and fun for people of all ages and abilities. Kids love to make cards and adults love to receive these masterpieces. Why not invest in a card making starter kit for each of your kids. You can pick a theme depending on what their hobbies and interests are and they will love all the paper, sequence, stickers etc. that come included. If a family member has a birthday coming up encourage them to make and send their own cards to this person. They could even sell their finished cards to friends and family members and make some extra pocket money or donate it to charity!

Doily Decorating

Doilies are ornamental mats that are made out of paper. They are usually used to decorate plates or cake stands. Buy a pack (it will cost you about £4 for 30) and place them on a table with crayons, pencils, paint, glitter, scraps of paper and anything else that could be used to decorate them. Get the kids to decorate them as wildly and as brightly as they can and tell them that you can use them at dinner time as place mats. They will love to see their artwork as a feature on the table. It may also encourage them to help to set the table!

Pebble Painting

Take a trip to your local garden centre (or beach if you live close to one) and buy a bag of good sized pebbles.  Encourage the kids to make ‘pebble pets’ by painting them and sticking googly eyes on. This is such a simple summer craft idea and you will end up with a clean and tidy pet that the kids can keep in their room!

There are so many other summer crafting activities that you do as a family such as making lolly stick men, paper plate masks, pipe cleaner people, sock puppets and many more. I hope this has inspired you and given you some good ideas.
